Medical oncology management of advanced hepatocellular carcinoma 2019: a reality check

Amy Lee, Fa-Chyi Lee

Frontiers of Medicine 2020, Volume 14, Issue 3,   Pages 273-283 doi: 10.1007/s11684-019-0728-2

Abstract: In terms of global cancer-related deaths, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has the fourth highest mortality rate. Up until 2017, treatment of advanced HCC was largely limited to sorafenib, an oral tyrosine kinase inhibitor, with little to no success in the development of alternative treatment options. However, in the past two years, there has been an unprecedented increase in both the number and type of treatment options available for HCC. As of 2019, the US FDA has approved four oral tyrosine kinase inhibitors, two immune checkpoint inhibitors, and one anti-angiogenesis antibody for the treatment of HCC. Even with this new variety, systemic treatment of advanced HCC remains largely unsatisfactory, and the median survival rate stands at approximately one year. The expected breakthrough of using immune checkpoint inhibitors in advanced HCC did not materialize in 2019. The use of immune checkpoint inhibitors in conjunction with oral tyrosine kinase inhibitors or anti-angiogenesis medications is the current clinical research trend, the results of which are eagerly anticipated. Despite limited progress in survival, HCC research is currently experiencing a period of growth and innovation, and there is hope for significant advances in the treatment of advanced HCC as the field continues to develop.

Appendiceal inflammation affects the length of stay following appendicectomy amongst children: a myth or reality

Khurram Siddique, Shirin Mirza, Gandra Harinath

Frontiers of Medicine 2013, Volume 7, Issue 2,   Pages 264-269 doi: 10.1007/s11684-013-0259-1

Abstract:

The effect of the severity of appendiceal inflammation on post-operative stay in children following appendicectomy has shown conflicting results. This study was conducted to determine the association between the severity of appendiceal inflammation and post-operative stay amongst children undergoing open appendicectomy. A retrospective cohort study was conducted at a District General Hospital for two years. A total of 204 patients were included in the study with an age range between 3 and 16 years. Females were 54.9% while the rest were male. Mean age was 12.5±3 years. The association of the severity of appendiceal inflammation and post-operative stay was assessed by multivariable Cox Proportional hazards model. Mean post-operative stay was 2.32 days (95% CI 2.14–2.51). Macroscopically perforated appendix, histological inflammation and post-operative complications were significantly associated with post-operative stay on univariable analysis (P<0.05). Whereas, the multivariable analysis showed that the post-operative stay was significantly prolonged only in case of either perforated appendix or post-operative complications while it remained unaffected by the histological inflammation.

Enhanced activation of persulfate using mesoporous silica spheres augmented Cu–Al bimetallic oxide particles

Frontiers of Chemical Science and Engineering 2023, Volume 17, Issue 10,   Pages 1581-1592 doi: 10.1007/s11705-023-2327-7

Abstract: Herein, Cu–Al bimetallic oxide was synthesized and mixed with mesoporous silica spheres via a simple hydrothermal method. The prepared sample was then analyzed and employed to activate potassium peroxydisulfate for bisphenol A removal. Based on the results of X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersion spectroscopy, Cu–Al bimetallic oxide was determined as CuO-Al2O3, and mesoporous silica spheres were found around the these particles. At 30 min, a bisphenol A degradation level of 90% was achieved, and it remained at over 60% after five consecutive cycles, indicating the catalyst’s superior capacity and stability. In terms of removal performance, the radical pathway (including SO4•‒, OH •, and O2•‒) and singlet oxygen (1O2) played minor roles, while electron migration between bisphenol A, potassium peroxydisulfate, and the catalyst played a dominant role. The introduction of Al2O3 promoted the formation of surface oxygen vacancies, which improved ligand complex formation between potassium peroxydisulfate and the catalyst, thereby facilitating electron migration. Furthermore, mesoporous silica spheres augment not only enhanced bisphenol A adsorption but also alleviated Cu leaching. Overall, this work is expected to provide significant support for the rational development of catalysts with high catalytic activity for persulfate activation via surface electron migration.
